KHQ-TV, one of the leading NBC stations in America, is seeking an experienced, dynamic, engaging and creative leader to be our next News Director. The News Director will be responsible for budgets, training, hiring, talent contracts, strategic planning, and the station’s digital news content. The model news director will work closely with promotion and sales, and should be engaged in building and developing a highly skilled, passionate and empowered news room staff.  The News Director should also possess a strong understanding of social media and its relationship to local news.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

KHQ’s news leader is responsible for guiding more than 40 hours of broadcast content to the air. They will be deeply involved in our 24 hour sports and weather channel— coordinating local coverage with a team of dedicated sports journalists. The individual should have outstanding news judgement. They should also possess sufficient “people skills” — meaning they can mentor individuals and coach them. The News Director must have and maintain the highest code of ethical conduct, taking ownership for protecting the station and the license.  Five years proven news director and or news management experience required.  The candidate must have strong communication, writing and presentation skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven presentation skills to diverse audiences
  •  Efficient time management skills - must be able to work independently and handle multiple ongoing tasks with rapidly changing priorities
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university.

RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a good writer for broadcast
  • Must have solid news judgment
  • Must be able to manage a newscast for time constraints
  • Willingness to work overtime when necessary
  • Knowledge of and desire to participate in social media
  • Eagerness to share skills with other staff members and the community, as well as learn from others
  • Ability to adapt in a changing media and technology landscape
  • Ability to use web-based applications such as G-mail, Google, Facebook, etc.
  • Ability to create non-article content - e.g. tweets, video clips, databases - for online
  • Technology and/or web development experience preferred
  • Great storyteller who writes to video
  • Must enjoy working as one “man” band
  • Familiarity with ENG and SNG
  • Ability to meet daily deadlines and work cooperatively with other staff members
  • Experience editing news copy and videotape
  • Good phone etiquette
  • Newsroom computer experience preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with no DUI convictions
  • Ability to carry fifty pounds of television equipment
